Surgical Treatment : Open Repair

The traditional method of repairing descending aortic aneurysms involves a left thoracotomy, which is an opening between the ribs on the left side of the chest. The aneurysmal aorta is excised, and a Dacron tube graft is sewn to the remaining aorta. For this operation, it is not usually necessary to stop the heart, but we generally use a form of partial cardiopulmonary bypass, which allows the heart to continue beating on its own.
